Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Irina Belinsky, who serves patients throughout the State of New York.
New York City, Oct 8, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - Dr. Belinsky is an experienced ophthalmologist specializing in oculoplastic, reconstructive, and orbital surgery, with additional training in ocular oncology. At NYU Langone Eye Center, she treats patients of all ages who have conditions related to the eyelids, tear duct system, and orbit. She also manages tumors affecting the eye and surrounding areas, specializing in conjunctival, eyelid, and orbital oncology.
"In approaching the care of my patients, I advocate for clear communication, focused education, and compassion for each individual's needs. At NYU Langone's Eye Center, we have the advantage of working closely with many different specialists, including neurologists, otolaryngologists, plastic surgeons, dermatologists, endocrinologists, and radiation oncologists, delivering integrated and advanced care. These collaborations offer the knowledge, skill, and creativity necessary to deliver more choices in care. Additionally, they optimize functional recovery and aesthetic results in the most challenging circumstances" expressed Dr. Belinsky.
Alongside her clinical role, she serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor within the Department of Ophthalmology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. With a long tradition of success in training new generations of ophthalmologists, the Department of Ophthalmology conducts world-class research with expertise in imaging, biomedical engineering, glaucoma, corneal disease, vision neuroscience, and vision restoration.
Drawn to medicine's blend of science and compassionate care, Dr. Belinsky was inspired by her mother's and grandfather's practice of ophthalmology. Her path to the specialty began as a medical student, when she received a National Institutes of Health grant for translational cancer research and chose to study tumors affecting the eyes.
After graduating with her medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University in 2010, she went on to pursue her residency in ophthalmology at NYU Langone Medical Center in 2014. This was followed by a fellowship in ophthalmic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 2015, and an additional fellowship in oculoplastic surgery at Wills Eye Hospital in 2016.
A member of the North American Society of Academic Orbital Surgeons, she is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.
Conducting research on diagnosis and treatment methods for eyelid and orbital tumors, Dr. Belinsky's work was recently recognized with the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) Research Award. Equally rewarding and challenging was the opportunity given to her to participate in and contribute to an international surgical and teaching mission in Mongolia through the Virtue Foundation.
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.
On a more personal note, Dr. Belinsky speaks multiple languages, including English, Russian, and Spanish.
