Half of the people surveyed are priced out on brand-name GLP-1s

14 of the 28 US adults surveyed named a monthly maximum under $149 with no insurance help.

Cheyenne, Wyoming, October 20, 2026 - glp·helper today released results from a price survey of 28 US adults who take or plan to take a GLP-1 medication. As of October 16, 2026, $149/month is the lowest self-pay price for any brand-name GLP-1 (Wegovy pill at 1.5 mg).

Our survey showed that 14 out of 28 (50% of respondents) would not pay more than $149/month for GLP-1s with no insurance help. Another 11 of 28 would pay $149 but not the $349 Wegovy pen. Only 3 of 28 would pay $349. We call a person priced out of a price when the most they said they would pay sits below it. Brand prices checked October 5, 2026, compounded prices October 16, 2026.

Until December 2024 when the FDA declared the tirzepatide shortage resolved in December 2024 and the semaglutide shortage in February 2025, compound pharmacies sold GLP-1s at pricing around the $150/month mark.

Although Novo Nordisk reduced the price of their Wegovy pen fell from $499 to $349 in November 2025, and the Ozempic pen was cut to $349 the same day, 25 of 28 respondents named a maximum under $349.

Although more research is required to account for socioeconomic variation, the trend is clear. Brand-name GLP-1s are more expensive and as a result, according to our study, a large portion of the population is not able to afford the GLP-1 month price tag - often much higher than the $150/month compound alternative.

About the study

glp·helper recruited 30 US adults through Prolific on October 3, 2026. Twenty-eight take a GLP-1, took one, or plan to start within a year. Each respondent named the most they would pay per month for a brand-name GLP-1 with no insurance help. Maker self-pay prices were checked on October 5, 2026.
