MD Angels Announces Acquisition of Portfolio Company BrightWater Medical

August 07, 2019 - /PressAdvantage/ - MD Angels, a physician-based angel investment group located in Chicago, Illinois, has announced the successful exit of one of its portfolio companies. Members of MD Angels made an investment in BrightWater Medical’s series B round in July 2018.

The successful exit occurred on June 14, 2019, when Merit Medical Systems Inc., a leading manufacturer and marketer of proprietary disposable devices utilized in diagnostic, interventional and therapeutic procedures, especially in radiology, cardiology, oncology, endoscopy and critical care, acquired BrightWater Medical Inc.

BrightWater Medical was founded by Dr. Robert Smouse, Professor of Radiology and Surgery, at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. The company’s ConvertX® catheter revolutionizes the treatment of ureteral obstruction by replacing what was once a series of procedures with a single procedure using their innovative interventional radiology device. Brightwater Medical has recently received FDA clearance for the ConvertX® biliary stent system.

MD Angels is the largest physician-based angel investment group in the Midwest that specializes in healthcare and the life sciences. To achieve this goal, they support healthcare innovation by connecting healthcare entrepreneurs with their physician investors providing both capital and healthcare expertise. In 2018, MD Angels leveraged the knowledge base of its members, which include physicians in a wide variety of specialties, to evaluate over 200 companies for potential investments.

Chad A. Glazer, MD, President of MD Angels, says, "The exit of BrightWater Medical, Inc. represents one of the first successful exits for MD Angels. Our group had its beginnings around 4 years ago. However, 2018 was a breakout year for MD Angels with over $1M in capital deployed by its members to add 4 companies to the investment portfolio of deals originated within MD Angels.” Chad A. Glazer, MD, continues, “For an angel investing group to have a profitable exit in the early stage investing space within 11 months of an investment is a great achievement. We at MD Angels are extremely confident in our process and ability to support start-up and early stage companies in the healthcare vertical.”

Meanwhile, Amish Patel, MD MBA, board member of MD Angels, says, “Through our networking and due diligence process, we seek out opportunities where we can add value, and we think BrighWater is a good example of how that can work for the benefit of the portfolio company and our members.”

Members of MD Angels come from diverse backgrounds and medical specialties ranging from healthcare executives, clinicians, to researchers. In their due diligence process, they evaluate companies on multiple fronts and perform a detailed analysis of whether or not a certain technology or product can get to market given the regulatory, third party payer, and clinical adoption hurdles.

Chinese report says illnesses may be from new coronavirus

Jul 11, 2020

BEIJING — A preliminary investigation into viral pneumonia illnesses sickening dozens of people in and around China has identified the possible cause as a new type of coronavirus, state media said Thursday. Chinese health authorities did not immediately confirm the report from state broadcaster CCTV. Coronaviruses are spread through coughing or sneezing or by touching an infected person. Some cause the common cold and others can lead to more severe respiratory diseases, such as SARS and MERS. Such viruses are common in people but more exotic versions from bats, camels and other animals have caused severe illness. The novel coronavirus...

Counting whales from space pitched as key to saving them

Jul 11, 2020

PORTLAND, Maine — An aquarium and an engineering firm in Massachusetts are partnering on a project to better protect whales by monitoring them from space. New England Aquarium of Boston and Draper of Cambridge say whale conservation needs new, higher-tech solutions to protect whales from extinction. So, the pair is working together using data from sources such as satellites, sonar and radar to keep a closer eye on how many whales are in the ocean. The effort has an easy to understand name for a project involving complex data and surveillance — the aquarium and firm are calling the project...

The experiment explores the possibility of making freshly baked items for space travelers. With...

Threat to US elections not limited to Russia in 2020

Jul 11, 2020

WASHINGTON — Russia interfered in the 2016 election and may try to sway next year's vote as well. But it's not the only nation with an eye on U.S. politics. American officials sounding the alarm about foreign efforts to disrupt the 2020 election include multiple countries in that warning. Concerns abound not only about possible hacking of campaigns, but also about the spread of disinformation on social media and potential efforts to breach voting databases and even alter votes. The anxiety goes beyond the possibility that U.S. adversaries could directly affect election results: The mere hint of foreign meddling could...

China says US has 'weaponized' visas to target exchanges

Jul 11, 2020

BEIJING — China on Wednesday accused the U.S. of having "weaponized" the issuance of visas following the reported inability of a top Chinese space program official to obtain permission to travel to a key conference in Washington. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters that the head of the Chinese delegation to the International Astronautical Congress wasn't able to obtain a visa following an Oct. 12 interview, making it difficult for Chinese representatives to attend important events at the meeting. Reports said the vice chairman of the China National Space Administration, Wu Yanhua, had planned to attend the congress. Hua...
