Twitter finds software privacy bug affecting direct messages

Sep 22, 2018

NEW YORK — Twitter says it found a software bug that may have sent some private messages to the wrong people. But the company says the problem specifically involved direct messages or protected tweets sent to businesses and other accounts overseen by software developers. The issue, which started in May 2017, could in some cases have directed messages to the wrong developer. The company discovered and fixed the flaw on Sept. 10. Twitter says less than 1 percent of its 335 million users were affected, and notes that it hasn't seen evidence that any actual messages were misdelivered. Twitter says...

Dow hits another all-time high on mixed day for US stocks

Sep 22, 2018

Wall Street capped a milestone-setting week Friday with a mixed finish for the major U.S. stock indexes and the second all-time high in two days for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. An afternoon sell-off erased modest gains for the S&P 500 that had the benchmark index on track to eke out its own record high for much of the day. Losses for technology companies and retailers, two of the market's hottest sectors this year, offset gains in energy and industrial stocks. "When you have a big up week like we've had, we're at all-time highs, for people to take a...

Japan space rovers lowered to asteroid to collect data

Sep 22, 2018

TOKYO — A Japanese spacecraft released two small rovers on an asteroid on Friday in a mission that could provide clues to the origin of the solar system. The Japan Space Exploration Agency said the two Minerva-II-1 rovers were lowered from the unmanned spacecraft Hayabusa2 to the asteroid Ryugu. The spacecraft arrived near the asteroid, about 280 million kilometers (170 million miles) from Earth, in June. JAXA said confirmation of the robots' safe touchdown has to wait until it receives data from them on Saturday. Hayabusa2 approached as close as 55 meters (180 feet) to the asteroid to lower the...

FBI: Solar observatory closed after child porn case opened

Sep 22, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The mysterious closure of a solar observatory in New Mexico earlier this month happened after the FBI opened a child pornography investigation involving a janitor's computer found at the observatory, and agents tracked wireless signals used to access child porn, according to an FBI search warrant affidavit. The mountaintop Sunspot Solar Observatory closed from Sept. 6 to Sept. 17, but the research association that manages it has said only that an unspecified security issue was the reason for the closure. The facility employs a small group of scientists, researchers and students to capture some of the sharpest...

State-backed hackers target Gmail of US senators, aides

Sep 22, 2018

State-backed hackers are still trying to break into the personal email accounts of U.S. senators and their aides — and a lawmaker focused on cybersecurity says the Senate's security office should stop refusing to help defend them. Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, said in a Wednesday letter to Senate leaders that his office discovered that "at least one major technology company" has warned an unspecified number of senators and aides that their personal email accounts were "targeted by foreign government hackers." On Thursday, Google spokesman Aaron Stein confirmed that his company had notified the Senate targets. Neither Stein nor...
