Detectives: 1994 technology slowed search for serial killer

Aug 24, 2019

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Detectives who investigated a string of 1994 slayings that Gary Ray Bowles confessed to committing say he probably would have been caught sooner if they had had today's technology. Bowles is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection Thursday for the murder of Walter Hinton in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Prosecutors say Hinton was Bowles' sixth and final known victim. Investigators suspected Bowles almost immediately after the first of the killings: He left a parole document with his name on it in the victim's Daytona Beach home. He also was caught on an ATM camera trying to withdraw...

Earth's future is being written in fast-melting Greenland

Aug 24, 2019

HELHEIM GLACIER, Greenland — This is where Earth's refrigerator door is left open, where glaciers dwindle and seas begin to rise. New York University air and ocean scientist David Holland, who is tracking what's happening in Greenland from both above and below, calls it "the end of the planet." He is referring to geography more than the future. Yet in many ways this place is where the planet's warmer and watery future is being written. It is so warm here, just inside the Arctic Circle, that on an August day, coats are left on the ground and Holland and colleagues...

Poland minister resigns over online hate campaign allegation

Aug 24, 2019

WARSAW, Poland — Poland's deputy justice minister resigned Tuesday after allegations surfaced he encouraged an online hate campaign against judges critical of the government. Lukasz Piebiak said in a statement he was stepping down in the interest of the government, adding that he planned to sue the onet.pl news portal, which published the allegations against him, for libel. Earlier in the day Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said he had demanded an explanation from Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro after the site published its story. Onet.pl reported that Piebiak encouraged an online user to try to discredit some 20 judges who had...

Indian spacecraft launched last month is now orbiting moon

Aug 24, 2019

NEW DELHI — An unmanned spacecraft India launched last month began orbiting the moon Tuesday as it approaches the lunar south pole to study previously discovered water deposits. The Indian Space Research Organization said it successfully maneuvered Chandrayaan-2, the Sanskrit word for "moon craft," into lunar orbit, nearly a month after it left Earth. The mission is led by two female scientists. Chandrayaan will continue circling the moon in a tighter orbit until reaching a distance of about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the moon's surface. The lander will then separate from the orbiter and use rocket fuel to brake...

New lawsuit seeks protection zone for Northwest orcas

Aug 24, 2019

SEATTLE — A new U.S. lawsuit filed Monday seeks to establish a whale protection zone for endangered orcas in the Pacific Northwest. The Center for Biological Diversity and the Orca Relief Citizens' Alliance sued NOAA Fisheries in U.S. District Court in Seattle, saying the agency has failed to act on a petition it filed in 2016. The petition sought to bar vessels from a 10- to 12-square-mile (26- to 31-square-kilometer) area west of San Juan Island where the orcas, called southern resident killer whales, feed from April through September each year. Any vessels exempted from the ban would be required...
