Need some milk? Driverless cars start delivering groceries

Dec 19, 2018

The nation's largest grocery chain stepped into the driverless delivery market Tuesday, bringing milk, eggs and other items to a customer's home in a vehicle with nobody at the wheel. Although limited to delivering within about a mile (1.5 kilometers) of one Arizona supermarket owned by Kroger Co., it represents the latest step for industries trying to lower delivery costs of everyday items and those trying to launch self-driving cars on public roads. Tuesday's delivery arrived at Shannon Baggett's house in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale. She was already receiving groceries weekly from larger, manned self-driving vehicles that the company...

Uber approved to resume autonomous car tests in Pittsburgh

Dec 19, 2018

PITTSBURGH — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has approved Uber's request to resume testing of autonomous vehicles on public roads in the Pittsburgh area. The approval, effective Monday and lasting for one year, comes about nine months after one of Uber's autonomous test vehicles hit and killed an Arizona pedestrian. Testing was suspended after March 18 crash in Tempe, Arizona. Uber can test throughout Allegheny County, where Pittsburgh is located. Its vehicles must have at least one human backup driver and two if the company plans to go over 25 miles per hour (40 kph), department spokeswoman Erin Waters-Trasatt said....

Democrats unable to quell internal squabble over voter data

Dec 19, 2018

Democratic National Committee officials and a group of state party leaders were unable Tuesday to resolve their bitter fight over how the party manages and pays for the voter data used in campaigns. The saga, which spilled into open view in recent weeks, pits the DNC and its push for a more centralized voter data system against many state party leaders wary of giving up control they now enjoy. The eventual outcome will determine how extensive and useful a voter information file will be to the Democratic presidential nominee in 2020. The fight also is testing DNC Chairman Tom Perez...

NASA's 1st flight to moon, Apollo 8, marks 50th anniversary

Dec 19, 2018

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Fifty years ago on Christmas Eve, a tumultuous year of assassinations, riots and war drew to a close in heroic and hopeful fashion with the three Apollo 8 astronauts reading from the Book of Genesis on live TV as they orbited the moon. To this day, that 1968 mission is considered to be NASA's boldest and perhaps most dangerous undertaking. That first voyage by humans to another world set the stage for the still grander Apollo 11 moon landing seven months later. There was unprecedented and unfathomable risk to putting three men atop a monstrous new...

Farout: Scientists spot solar system's farthest known object

Dec 19, 2018

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Astronomers have spotted the farthest known object in our solar system — and they've nicknamed the pink cosmic body "Farout." The International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center announced the discovery Monday. "Farout" is about 120 astronomical units away — that's 120 times the distance between Earth and the sun, or 11 billion miles. The previous record-holder was the dwarf planet Eris at 96 astronomical units. Pluto, by comparison, is 34 astronomical units away. The Carnegie Institution's Scott Sheppard said the object is so far away and moving so slowly it will take a few years to...
